Caring for Marble and Wood

Marble and wood are beautiful, natural surfaces that can really elevate a kitchen counter or dining table. They also are durable materials that with the right care, can last you for many years. Since both surfaces are both porous, they take a little more attention to keep them looking their best. It’s important to note, that due to the chemical composition of both marble and wood, there will naturally be scratches, pitting, cracks, stains, and even dulling of the shine over time that you may not see in harder or less natural materials. We think this only adds to their charm, telling a story of their life in your home.

NOTE: For hybrid marble and wood products, follow the instructions for marble products. Otherwise, the oils used on wood could stain the marble.

Caring for Marble

Marble is a soft and chemically sensitive surface composed of calcium carbonate, which makes it susceptible to etching by any acids. But given the proper care, its beauty will last for generations. Please clean up spills immediately to minimize damage and etching to your marble.

  • Hand wash marble with a mild, colorless dish detergent and a soft sponge or rag. Sanitize with a solution of half water and half vinegar. Too much acid is not good for marble.
  • Do not put in the dishwasher or soak in water.
  • Do not place in the microwave
  • Do not use vinegar, bleach, ammonia or other general-purpose cleaners.
  • Do not use scouring powders and abrasives because they will scratch the surface.

Caring for Wood (Wood and Resin Bowls included)

Wood is a porous surface that needs to be properly cared for to remain in good condition. Most importantly, wood should not be soaked in water, especially when attached to a surface with a different chemical makeup or it will expand and break way (for example, soaked wood will cause the joint between the marble or resin to weaken and break). However, given the right care, wood will maintain its integrity and keep a brilliant shine that lasts for years.

  • Hand-wash marble with a mild, colorless dish detergent and a soft sponge or rag. Sanitize with a solution of half water and half vinegar. Too much acid is not good for marble.
  • Keep dry and lightly oiled with mineral oil* when necessary.
  • Do not run wood under running water. This will cause the resin to crack and separate from the marble or resin.

*Mineral oil is a non-toxic, non-drying product derived from petroleum that is colorless, odorless and tasteless.

**From time to time, it is recommended to clean wooden objects with a mixture of 1 part white vinegar to 3 parts water, carefully wet the bowl with a well soaked cloth and leave it for several minutes. This will remove sticky residues and possible bacterial growth.
